Lace Maskell

A "maskell" is the heraldic term for a voided lozenge - a diamond-shaped outline.

The manuscripts differ enough that I felt it was necessary to compare the three versions side-by-side, in an attempt to understand what it should look like. You can find my analysis here.

This is one braid in a set of braids based on exchanging loops between fingers. "A lace frettys" [t49] is a round variation of this braid with a central core to show off the interlacement.

"A lace bend rounde" [t25] and the "cheyne braid" [t28] are also worked by exchanging loops, but in an entirely different sequence.

Take eight loops in two colors, and place them on the following fingers:
Color 1: A B of both hands
Color 2: C D of both hands

Exchange loops with the opposite fingers:
A right exchanges with A left reversed.
(Put the A right loop over and around A left, taking A left reversed.)
B right exchanges with B left reversed.
C right exchanges with C left reversed.
D right exchanges with D left reversed.

Repeat these four exchanges once more.

Exchange the top and bottom (A B and C D) pairs:
A right exchanges with B left reversed.
B right exchanges with A left reversed.
C right exchanges with D left reversed.
D right exchanges with C left reversed.

Exchange loops with the opposite fingers (just like before):
A right exchanges with A left reversed.
B right exchanges with B left reversed.
C right exchanges with C left reversed.
D right exchanges with D left reversed.

Repeat these four exchanges once more.

Exchange the central (B C) pair:
C right exchanges with B left reversed.
B right exchanges with C left reversed.

Repeat from the beginning.

And when thou hast changed twice, that all thy bows that were on thy right hand be on thy right hand again, then shall A right change his bow with B left so that A right take through his bow the bow of B left reversed.
