Lace Ray

This braid and the following "Lace pall" [t55] combine two different single worker braids, with one person working "A brod lace party" [t23] and the other "An open lace" [t21].

Serene contains a similarly named braid ("The same lace ray" [s30]), which differs by not using departed loops. Rather than making four narrow stripes, the Serene instructions produce a braid with one wide stripe down the center, bordered by narrow stripes in the second color. This concept, using fewer loops, appears earlier in Harleian and Tollemache as "A thin lace bordered" [t8].

Seat a partner on your right side.

Take fourteen departed loops in four colors (one pair of colors for each worker), and place them on the following fingers:
Outer hands: Two on A, two on B, one on C
Inner hands: B C

Arrange one color up on each worker's own hands.

Exchange loops on your inner hands:
Your A goes through B from within outward, and takes your partner's B unreversed.
Partner's A takes your B unreversed.
Lower A to B.

Repeat the exchange (twice total) so you each have your own color back again.

Work with the inner hands:
A goes through B C inner, and takes the front loop on B outer unreversed.
B takes the front loop on A outer unreversed.
A goes through the front loop on B inner, and takes the loop on C outer unreversed.
Lower the outer loops.

You: Give the loop on A outer a full 360° turn.

Work with the outer hands:
A goes through B C outer, and takes the front loop on B inner unreversed.
B takes the front loop on A inner unreversed.
A goes through the front loop of B outer, and takes the loop on C inner unreversed.
Lower the inner loops.

Repeat from the beginning.

Lace ray.
Take 7 bows departed and set on thy hands as in the lace parti of 7 bows [t23] and thy fellow shall have other 7 departed of other 2 colors so that either of you have but 2 bows on your next hands then shall thou change the over bow of thy right hand with the over bow of thy fellows left hand 2 times as thou didst in the lace bordered [t8] then work both as ye did in the broad party of 7 bows [t23] so that thou shall turn the over bow on the further hand and thy fellow not and so & etc.
